BURTON MORRIS - RECENT WORKS
MARCH 24TH, 2011
BURTON MORRIS - RECENT WORKS AT THE POP GALLERY
Artist Burton Morris’ paintings put an energetic and colorful spin on today’s culture. In his post-Pop style, Morris boldly projects an enticing mood of high energy and optimism portraying images that people relate to in everyday life. “I want to inspire and intrigue my audience by challenging the way they look at everyday objects around us.”
He first gained national attention in the mid 1990s when his artwork was chosen to hang on the set of the NBC hit television series “Friends.” Over the years, his artwork has been selected for the 76th Academy Awards®, the Paris World Cup Soccer Games, the 38th Montreux Jazz Festival, the 2004 Summer Olympic Games and the 2006 MLB All-Star Game. He has created signature artwork for Absolut Vodka, H.J. Heinz Corporation, Chanel and Kellogg’s Corporation among many others. In addition, Morris’ artwork has raised millions of dollars for countless charities worldwide.
Burton Morris original artworks are displayed internationally and are featured in the collections of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, The Jimmy Carter Center, The United Nations and the Elysée collection. One-man exhibitions include Sotheby’s of Amsterdam and the International Olympic Museum.

READ ABOUT PETER MARS
DISCLAIMER:
THE WORKS OF PETER MARS ARE NOT COMMISSIONED, ENDORSED OR SPONSORED BY ANY THIRD PARTY
"See a sign and you hear America singing."--Walt Whitman
Peter Mars has been the leader of Chicago's Avant Pop Movement for the past fifteen years. Combining avant-garde innovation with a deep Pop Art sensibility, Mars fuses and confuses the traditional distinctions between high culture and low art. The artist's sensibilities fall somewhere between Dada and Pop, "In that area where nonsense and popular culture so frequently meet."
"Leader of Chicago's Avant Pop Movement" Chicago Sun Times
Using the joy and nostalgia that can be found in everyday objects, Mars explores American culture, the passage of time, and the icons that each period adopts as its own. Billboard advertisements with years of old ads peeling through, outmoded wallpaper designs overprinted with modern icons, recognizable typography overlaps young female faces, antique Coca Cola logos juxtaposed with a fresh-faced Elvis --each elicits a multiplicity of American eras and cultural identities.
"Witty and excitingly of the moment" New Orleans Times Picayune
Much of Mars' work reflects the pop culture of his childhood in the 1960s and 70s, notably the idealized American family, comic book figures, and "space age" invention. In magazine advertising, product design, and television programming Mars finds a fertile language with which to work. To say that Mars appropriates these images, however, does not capture the rich exchange of ideas that takes place on canvas. These are dialogues, every bit as much "collaborations" as the work Mars created with notable "outsider" artists Howard Finster, R.A. Miller, Wesley Willis and "Big Al" Taplet.
Born in Portland, Oregon in 1959, Peter Mars began collecting at an early age: match packs, comic books, baseball cards, arrowheads, coins and later, motorcycles. Rather than striving to compile exhaustive collections, Mars sought "separate images of beauty," small treasures that "tell the story of American popular culture."
Using silkscreen as his medium of choice, Mars is able to engage his subject matter in a way that lets images "speak their own language." In juxtaposition, they agree or disagree, emphasize or interrupt, as if in animated conversation. The result is textured, complex, wry, and always more than the sum of its parts.
"A mixture of spiritual consumerism, banality, and resonant mystery" New Orleans Art Review
Peter Mars' work appears in galleries from coast to coast and can be found in the collections of: Nate Berkus, Oprah's Interior Designer, Sheryl Crow, Michael Jordan, Betsey Johnson, Halo Industries, Tow Records, Elisa Behnk, Former Director of Public Information and Marketing for The Carnegie, Warhol and MOMA Museums and Mr. & Mrs. John Heinz Waller.
Articulate and amusing, Peter Mars speaks with unassuming clarity about his inspirations, education and collaborations:
On images and objects:
Found objects are fun! "It was a running joke in our family that I never looked up. Wherever I was as a kid I was always looking down at the ground, looking for stuff--arrowheads, pennies, agates--I was always on the lookout for this kind of treasure. I still draw lots of inspiration from these things we find in our everyday life, things we see all around us."
The "space age":
"I loved TV shows like Lost in Space, and Fireball XL-5. I particularly liked the robot on Lost in Space. I remember how thrilled I was when President Kennedy came on TV and promised us that soon we would each have our own personal robot. I remember how he said we were gonna have robots to walk the dog and everything! I just couldn't wait to grow up so I could start to work with my robot. When that didn't happen, I was sad."
On printmaking:
"Right away I loved the feeling of working with silk and ink and that sense of excitement never seems to fade. I love the high spinning sound you hear when you pull the ink across the silk. But most of all, I love that final breathtaking moment when you lift the screen from the paper and the image appears, as if by magic!"
"A master craftsman, who will teach you his closely guarded secrets, is very hard to find, so I was very fortunate when an artist friend introduced me to Dale Milford, a master printmaker working for the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center. Milford was the only one who generously shared his many years of knowledge and skills... he let me spend countless hours in his shop, learning all the processes and methods he knew."
On music:
Pop music--"In the past, I would go into my Chicago neighborhood where House Music and DJ culture originated. Music has always been a major part of my life and artistic endeavors. I've played in bands all my life and was heavily involved in the JUXTAPOZ and House Music Culture where I hosted hundreds of DJ events. With my art, I feel I am juxtaposing, sampling recombining, DJ-ing the visuals. To me music and painting are a lot alike and I think a painting can be as easy to understand as a song on the radio. If I like it, and it feels good to me, I want to hear it again. That's what makes it a good song or a good painting. To me, music and painting are a lot alike."
On inspiration:
"Often I will dream about art and specific paintings will come to me in explicit detail. Other times, I'll receive an idea for a unique combination of colors... I often use meditation to get inspired and to stay in touch with my creativity."
"When I was living in New Orleans, I came upon a print by Alexander Calder that totally changed the direction of my art. I was drawn in by its big broad flat sweeping strokes of color. When I learned that it was a serigraph, I said to myself, okay, I have to learn how to do that, whatever it is." .

STEPHEN HOLLAND
As a young painter Stephen Holland could not afford to hire live models, and so the images he found in boxing and other sports magazines became his subjects. He saw on those pages, the male form in all its power and glory, expressed as contemporary gladiators, conveying to him the determination and hard work any athlete must have to be a winner.
Indeed, Holland found great inspiration for himself as a young artist in those magazines. He put as much discipline, devotion and determination into his own work as the subjects he painted, always striving to make art that reflected and expressed their athleticism as they reached such high levels of achievement and physical prowess.
None of this came easily for Holland. As a child he was handicapped and had to watch his family and friends play sports. The steel brace he wore on his leg prevented him from attending neighborhood schools. But handicaps often heighten one's other sensitivities.
This proved true for Stephen as his talents developed elsewhere. His gift for drawing grew as he sat and sketched his friends. Though his mother used to say he began drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil, Stephen's abilities actually blossomed while attending a special high school which devoted half of each day to art studies. He later attended the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute, all in New York City.
Holland's talent and contributions to art and sports received national recognition in 1993, when the American Sport Art Museum awarded him the honor of Sports Artist of the Year. Other honors include being the Official Artist of the Los Angeles Kings and being one of the twelve artists selected by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the 100th Anniversary of the Olympics. His work is found in the collections of celebrities, athletes, and private collectors around the globe.
OPIE OTTERSTAD
There are as many stories that led to Opie Otterstad becoming an artist as there are stories about him as an artist. The journey began as three-year-old drawing during his fathers' sermons and continued along through his young life as his identity as an artist was burned deep into his person.
The lighthouse that led him in the direction of the rocky shore where sport and art meet, was Fran Pirozzolo. One of the leading sports psychologists in the world, Fran saw Opie working on some drawings while working a summer job at Baylor College of Medicine and asked if he did more than just draw. That led to commissions from Fran for Evander Holyfield, Greg Norman, and Berhard Langer. He has been a ship caught in that storm ever since.
Otterstad's choice is to live the life of an artist whose era has past, taking time to get to know his patrons and subjects as friends. His commissioned works have become statements about his own life in that they each represent the relationships in his life. They are personal expressions about the people he knows and calls friends. He takes a lot of time to create work that speaks to more than just an individual's sports life, but rather his or her entire life. Long cross country road trips to visit athletes where they live are not uncommon. He feels that a better understanding of his subject produces better paintings. His commitment to pushing his own boundaries has led to commission lists from the sports world that pile up on his studio docket.

Pop International Galleries is excited to introduce the art of Justin BUA!
Through the tip of his brush, BUA has told the stories of a world of color, dance and music. Through his iconic muses, "The Bass Player", "Guitarrista", "Piano Man", and "The DJ", he has described a place that was the true genesis of some of the biggest artistic styles in recent times.
Groundbreaking artist Justin BUA is internationally known for his best-selling collection of images influenced by the result of the Harlem Renaissance and Urban Culture in general. Born in 1968 in New York City’s untamed Upper West Side and raised between Manhattan and East Flatbush, Brooklyn, BUA was fascinated by the raw, visceral street life of the city he saw every day.
He attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts and complemented his education on the streets by writing graffiti and performing worldwide with breakdancing crews. BUA went on to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where he earned a BFA in Illustration.
Currently, he teaches figure drawing at the University of Southern California, while continuing to be a leading innovator in both the fine and commercial art worlds. BUA’s energetic and vocal worldwide fan base ranges from former presidents, actors, musicians, professional athletes, and dancers, to street kids and art connoisseurs.

Keith Haring Opportunity...
In Celebration Of His Astonishing Career And To Commemorate 20 Years Of His Passing In February 1990, All Keith Haring Artwork Will Be Available For The Month Of February 2010 At Savings Of 15% To 35%
Keith Haring's talent was first recognized on the subway platforms, where his trademark chalk-drawn figures could be seen for the price of a token.
"When I did a drawing and went back a week later, the drawing was still there. It was neither smudged nor did anyone try to clean it off. I mean, it seemed to have this protective power that prevented people from destroying them. Another thing that I realized how many people were seeing these things. Within a week, when I'd be doing another drawing, people would come up to me and say, "So you're the guy who did these drawings!" Because, see, there was never a signature. Nobody knew who was doing this stuff. And I started to realize the power and the potential of what I was doing."
His career had moved from underground New York to the most prestigious galleries and museums in the world by the time of his death in 1990.
It is hard to believe that 20 years this February, have gone by since Keith Haring passed away. Yet what is remarkable, is the legacy he left us; an astounding collection of images that continues to resonate with us, still provoking art lovers and collectors the world over, forever providing wonder and amusement for children and grownups everywhere.

Wednesday, May 27th 2009

We will be presenting Robert's most iconic photographs,
celebrating his "Art Under Glass" window exhibit

I realized long ago that my "raison d'etre was to chronicle and publish photos depicting the life and times that the Sixties inspired. It was "meant to be" - and photojournalism became my vocation, really my calling...whether I was hired to do so or not.
This drive consumed my life. We had a wonderful, extended adolescence.
It's almost as if our parents said, "OK - go out and have a good time, but just be back by 1974."

September 18th, 2008: ART FROM THE HEART - New Works By Mackenzie Thorpe
Finally, the much awaited and anticipated One-Person show for MACKENZIE THORPE.
This remarkable British artist continues to capture our attention and fascination with bold imagery that pushes the limits of our understanding of the human experience.
Mackenzie Thorpe strives to express the full range of human emotion through his art, whether through his trademark brightly colored pastels or his new bronze sculptures. His seemingly simple subject matter, from big headed happy children and square sheep, to tough industrial workers, belies the complexity of his concerns as an artist.
His works are associated with a principle of "art from the heart" - combining tenderness with fervency through both his abstract and figurative depictions. His work is wide ranging, from those accessible "square sheep" and duffle coat boys to the more challenging imagery, focusing on isolation and man's universal struggles. Much of Thorpe's work depicts his childhood growing up in Middlesbrough, yet he is well-known and beloved around the globe.
Click here to RSVP for the Mackenzie Thorpe Opening on September 18th.

December 1st, 2005 – The Book Bank Foundation hosts annual fundraiser
An event for
The Book Bank Foundation
will be held Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at Pop International Galleries located at 473 W. Broadway (at West Houston Street) in SoHo. A VIP reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., where sports and entertainment celebrities, and New York’s business community are slated to attend. This year’s event will raise funds that will go towards the purchase of computer hardware/software, clothing, and food for youth as well as allow the foundation to continue to work to reduce the homeless population by providing life-applicable resources that will eventually allow them to live independently.
The BBF, known for its ongoing philanthropic and literacy outreach efforts for youth and homeless communities, is making serious strides in bringing much needed attention to an all to often over-looked population. “Too often, we turn our heads and/or look down upon homeless people and ridicule youth, and we shouldn’t,” says Glenn Toby, renowned sports agent, philanthropist, and founder of The BookBank Foundation. “The Book Bank Foundation’s purpose is to serve as a right-hand resource to youth and homeless individuals and provide them with appropriate guidance and resources that will make them positive contributors to society, and their community.”
The owners of Pop International Galleries, Jeff Jaffe and Rick Rounick are delighted to host this event. Pop International will be contributing a portion of the sales generated from this event to The Book Bank Foundation.
